Anker PowerConf review

Anker surprised me recently with its announcement of a Bluetooth-powered speaker which revolves around conference calls. I really didn’t think there was really a problem that anyone was tasked to solve, but here we are.

After spending two weeks with the Anker PowerConf I have some thoughts on the device, some of which I found to be as surprising as the announcement itself.

Design

The industrial design of the PowerConf is superb. Honestly, it might be one of the most well-designed devices Anker has ever sent my way. It has nice, sleek curves with a combination of soft plastics and a metal chassis. There’s also a heft to the speaker that I appreciate which lends itself to a premium feel.

Atop the device, you’ll find the main control pad for the PowerConf. Here resides a d-pad style button layout for calls, volume up/down, mute, and play/pause. Simple but effective options to add to your desk calls.

Rounding out the PowerConf is, of course, the audio aspect. The device is equipped with six omni-directional mics and a large loudspeaker. This allows for voices to be picked up from any direction in the conference environment and provides ample output from the other end of the line.

Performance

This was my biggest takeaway from using the PowerConf: consistent. I could always take group calls via the speakerphone of any phone lying around. However, the Anker gave me the ability to do this and ultimately feel like the other caller was in the same room.

Gone are the issues of people always missing portions of the conversations or someone in the internal group not being heard. That’s easily covered with the six microphone system. It outperforms many of the clunky wired systems I’ve used and can easily be tossed in my bag at any point.

Another winning feature is that it supports both Bluetooth 5.0 and the USB-C standard. Having both is great for the PowerConf and its flexibility. Sometimes Bluetooth is not the best performing option, but you can work around that with a simple USB-C plug with no need for additional drivers. It just works. If you have a dedicated phone for conference calls or weekly meetings, it would be great to pair or plug in here.

Oh, and you can use it for media playback in both standards. It’s not anywhere near the quality of the dedicated media options for Anker, but it will play your favorite song when not taking phone calls. Just another nice touch.

And if it’s really something you’d like to use for music? Try the good ol’ fashion 3.5mm auxiliary jack. Yep, that’s there too.

Battery pack

Want to check off another box under flexibility? How about it also doubles as a power bank charger? On its own, the internal battery will power the PowerConf for up to 24 hours of talk time.

You can also use the device to charge your USB-C phones and tablets while on the go. The 6,700mAh bank should be able to top off most gadgets quickly and multiple times over. You’re already sitting at a desk right? Be productive with that time.

Final Thoughts

I initially walked into the review thinking it would be another item that hits the “used it once for a review” drawer in my home office. The reality couldn’t be further from the truth.

Recently, I’ve found myself using the Anker PowerConf for most of my calls. Whether it be one-on-one or group conversations, the PowerConf comes in handy for phone calls. Add in that it’s a decent Bluetooth speaker, and a power bank, and Anker has my full attention.

The Anker PowerConf is available via Anker’s website and Amazon for $130. This might be a little pricey when viewing as just one of the features, but you compound the value of when it’s in a single device. The PowerConf is well worth it in my eyes.

AndroidGuys Holiday Buying Guide 2018

The holidays are fast approaching and we’re running out of time to get gifts for those we love. Sure, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are passed, but that doesn’t mean that we’re out of luck. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best products that have passed through our doors here at AndroidGuys as a list of things you should consider for this holiday season.

Smartphones and Accessories

Smartphones are generally our favorite gadget. Here’s our pick for the smartphone you should grab this holiday season and some great accessories to go along with it.

OnePlus 6T

OnePlus has always been known as a company that sells good phones for a good price, but this year’s OnePlus 6T is its best phone yet. At under $600, the OnePlus 6T offers class-leading specs, a great UI, and fantastic build quality. The device is topped off with an under-display fingerprint scanner, one of only a handful of devices to feature the unique scanning technology.

You can grab the OnePlus 6T at OnePlus’ website and at T-Mobile.

Spigen Rugged Armor cases

If you’re looking for protection, there’s not a better name in the game than Spigen. The company makes several lineups of cases, but our favorite is the Rugged Armor line. It combines great looks, solid protection, and a slim feel for the perfect case. You can find it for just about any phone and it at only $12, it’s a steal.

You can get the Spigen Rugged Armor on Spigen’s website or Amazon.

Olloclip Multi-Device Clip

Smartphone cameras are getting better every day, but there are certain things they can’t do. To up your game, you may want to consider the Olloclip Multi-Device clip. It allows you to shoot in super-wide, ultra-wide, telephoto, fisheye, macro, macro 7x + 14x, and macro 21x with optional lenses. It is truly the jack of all trades when it comes to smartphone photography.

You can read our read our whole review here or pick one up from Olloclip’s website.

Wearable tech

Not all tech needs to live in your pocket. Here are some of our picks for our favorite tech you can wear too.

TicWatch Pro

TicWatch Pro 1

There are a ton of Wear OS devices out there, but the TicWatch Pro is one of our favorites. It features two displays, your standard display that allows you to swipe through notifications and reply to text messages. But, the magic happens when that display turns off and the second display shines through. It’s an OLED display that only shows the time and a few other vital pieces of information. It’s a real battery saver! You can read our full review of the TicWatch Pro or pick one up Mobvoi or Amazon.

HUAWEI Band 3 Pro

If a smartwatch is a bit much, you may want to consider the HUAWEI Band 3 Pro. It comes in white, black and blue and offers smartwatch-lite features. You can still get notifications from almost any app you choose and notified of incoming messages. You can even decline calls right from your wrist.

But the true power of the Band 3 Pro is its tracking features. It has built-in GPS, heart-rate tracking, and sleep tracking. Add in that it’s incredibly comfortable to wear and tracks your sleep and you have a winner. You can grab the HUAWEI Band 3 Pro from Amazon and B&H Photo for about $70.

TYLT Traveler Power Bag

Not all wearable tech fits on your wrist! That’s where the TYLT Traveler Power Bag comes in. With a ton of pockets for your everyday essentials, some hidden compartments for your valuables and an included battery, the TYLT Traveler Power Bag is perfect for the techie on the go. It comes with a 5,200 mAh battery and included cables. That should be enough to charge up your phone, but if you need a bit more, you can grab a bigger battery and swap them out. The compartment is big enough for a large 20,000 mAh battery! Between the battery and the incredible build quality, we can’t recommend this bag enough. You can grab one from TYLT or Amazon.

Staying powered up

Sure, you could just use the charger in the box or grab a $10 battery off Amazon, but if you want real power, check out these options.

Anker PowerPort II

Anker is widely known as one of the best accessory makers in the world because they produce high-quality products for an affordable price. The Anker PowerPort II is our choice for the best wall adapter out there right now. You get the fastest possible speeds and a design that can stand up to a beating. I routinely carry one of these in my bag and have never had one issue with it. Plus, with the dual-port design, you can help charge up your friend’s device or the tablet you’ve brought with you to watch some YouTube videos!  You can grab one from Amazon.

Blitzwolf BW-TC10 USB type-C to USB type-C

These days it’s not just high-end phones that rely on USB Type C for charging. The MacBook, Nintendo Switch, Pixelbook, and a whole array of devices also use the new standard. Compatible with Quick Charge 2.0, QC 3.0, and a host of other fast charging technologies, it’s the one you want for your phone or mobile devices. But, given the length of the cable and its shielded, protective coating, you’d be forgiven for outfitting your entire household with them. Attractively priced, you can find the cable for under $7 at Banggood. Go with a standard coating and you can scoop one up for under $3 right now.

Jackery PowerBar 77Wh/20800mAh

If you’re looking for the ultimate battery, look here first. The Jackery PowerBar has everything. The massive capacity means it can charge most modern smartphones up to four times before depleting its reserves. The solid design means it’ll stand up to whatever abuse you throw at it and the AC plug means you can power up your laptop, a fan, or whatever else you’d normally plug into a wall. This thing is large, in charge, and will have your back whenever you need it. You can get it from Amazon.

VPN & Internet Security

Whether you want to watch region-blocked Netflix videos or simply beef up your Wi-Fi connections, you’ll need a VPN for help. Here’s a few we love.

Windscribe Lifetime Pro Subscription

Windscribe is much more than a VPN. It’s a desktop application and browser extension that work in conjunction to protect your online privacy, unblock websites, and remove ads and trackers from your everyday browsing. With Windscribe, you’ll never mess with confusing settings and options menus again; just turn it on on your desktop once, and it’s good to go in the background forever. $59 at AndroidGuys Deals Store

Adguard Premium: Lifetime Subscription

Block annoying and potentially dangerous ads with this advanced Internet filter and ad blocker. Adguard protects your computer and other vulnerable devices from malware, phishing, spyware, and other scams so you can browse the web worry-free. $30 at AndroidGuys Deals Store

VPNSecure: Lifetime Subscription

Internet threats are a real thing – and surfing the web on a public connection can result in your personal data falling into the wrong hands. While most VPNs will help you surf undetected, some still maintain logs on your browsing movements, defeating the purpose of getting one in the first place! $20 at AndroidGuys Deals Store

These are the flat types of chargers you’ll find on desks and night stands; they often come in circular and rectangular shapes. Many of these offer variable output speeds so they’ll play nice with your friend’s iPhone, too.

Best wireless chargers for the Samsung Galaxy S8

Check out these great products from Anker, UPDESK, LEVO, Coolest, and Ninety7

November is upon us, which means the weather is getting colder, and the holiday season is getting closer. This also means that we are finally nearing the end of #phonepocalypse, as almost all of the flagships for 2018 have been revealed.

Now’s the time when we start purchasing gifts for friends, family, co-workers, and ourselves. To that end, we want to help make things easier for you. Here’s a roundup of five items we think you, or someone close to you, might really enjoy.

The Weekend Recommender is our chance to share some of the better tech items that have recently crossed our path. What you’ll find below are a few products that we’ve spent time with over the last few weeks which deserve special recognition. Who knows? Maybe your next favorite thing is listed here!

Anker PowerCore for Nintendo Switch (20100/13400)

Anker is the best in the business when it comes to keeping your devices charged. Previously, these were “limited” to just your smartphone or tablet, but Anker is upping the ante and expanding.

Recently, the company launched a couple of new portable chargers aimed at Nintendo fans. Specifically, the new PowerCore 20100 and 13400 for the Nintendo Switch.

The PowerCore 20100 and 13400 are optimized for Switch owners, and offers full-speed USB-C charging. There is also a standard USB port with Anker’s Power IQ technology to charge your other devices.

These will keep your Switch charged on the go, along with your smartphone or tablets. Pricing for the 20100 starts at $89.99, while the 13400 goes for $69.99.

We’ve covered Anker plenty of times here at AndroidGuys, and if the company keeps making great products, that will continue.

UpDesk Home

As someone who not only works a day-job but also freelance writes on the side, it’s important to have a great desk. Previously, I have primarily owned IKEA desks, but I wanted to venture into the world of standing desks.

The reason behind the movement is because it’s absolutely terrible for you to be sitting all day long. Regardless of whether you have a great ergonomic chair or not, you should stand every once in a while.UPDESK is a company that has specialized in standing desks, but the price tags were a bit steep. Recently, the UPDESK Home was introduced, which is likely to appeal to those who aren’t looking to break the bank.

The Home features a desktop size of 60-inches by 30-inches, which sounds a bit small. But in actuality, it is big enough to house your computer, monitor, speakers, and just about everything else you may need on your desktop.

As a desk, the Home is absolutely wonderful, but turning it into a standing desk is amazing. There is a built-in controller which has 4-presets, with “automatic drive”, to raise the desk when it’s time to stand.

UPDESK has also included two wheels on the bottom to make moving the desk a bit easier. This doesn’t mean the desk will slide around when you don’t want to, but it’s there to help you adjust.

Pricing for the UPDESK Home starts at $595 with free shipping. But we also recommend picking up a standing desk pad, which you can get for $97.

LEVO G2 Tablet Floor Stand

Because sometimes we can’t be bothered to hold onto a tablet for more than a few minutes. In all seriousness, a product like the LEVO G2 is perfect for the lean back experience.

Whether you’re sitting on the couch, relaxing in bed, or enjoying coffee in a chair in the den, the stand aims to please. It wheels into place, articulates, and holds your tablet in either portrait or landscape orientation.

Reading a book on your Fire HD tablet or binge-watching a few shows on Hulu is much more enjoyable if you can free up your hands. That’s exactly what happens here; you can sit back, relax, eat, or fiddle with your phone.

The LEVO G2 stand is a really sturdy solution that can roll under the edge of your bed or couch. The arm swings at two places, giving you an exact, comfortable placement. Moreover, the head twists and tilts on multiple angles so you end up with the angle that works best for the moment. All of this, of course, moves and adjusts on the fly so there’s zero hassle.

While we enjoyed reading books in bed, we also found the stand worked well in the office. Specifically, it was the perfect tool to display a tablet over the desk for passive monitoring of social media or YouTube TV. When done, we simply moved it away, and minimal effort.

The LEVO G2 has a range of 30-inches up to 56-inches; an extension is available for higher beds and treadmills. Purchase yours for $189.99 at levostore.com.

Coolest Cooler

Tailgating with your friends and chilling by the pool is cool, but do you know what’s cooler than that? The Coolest Cooler. Yeah, it’s a thing, and it lives up to its name.

Forget about throwing ice and a few drinks in a generic plastic cooler — It’s time to up your pre-game game. The Coolest Cooler not only provides space for a whole array of cold ones, but it packs so much more.

When was the last time your cooler came with a built-in blender? Raise your hand if you can plug your phone into that old Coleman tub you keep dragging to barbecues. We didn’t think so. The Coolest Cooler does that, and more.

With 60 quarts capacity, this cooler houses four plates, a ceramic knife, cutting board, a bottle opener, and corkscrew. Dope, right? It’s also got an accessory deck where you can throw your keys or phone. Let’s see, what else?

The Coolest comes with a Bluetooth splash-proof and shock-proof speaker with eight hours of charge. You can even pair it to another speaker for even louder party anthems.

Don’t know much about mixing up drinks? Turn to the drink guide and learn 20 ways to use five different ingredients. Now that you’re a bartender you’ll want to purchase the bar-top table accessory that uses the handy handle. Or, accessorize with the solar lid to ensure that you never run low on juice.

How does it do with actually keeping things cold, you ask? We found our review unit kept ice cold for more than a few days. To be fair, we tested it in 50-60 degree weather, but Coolest says 4-5 days is attainable on its website.

When you’re done with things and ready to head home, the bungee strap keeps your blanket and other items nice and snug. Pull out the telescopic handle and wheel it away. Speaking of which, the rubber wheels are twice as wide as you’d expect and make it really easy to control. Then, when you need to pick it up, reach for the two handles which are also double-wide.

The Coolest Cooler comes in a variety of colors; we reviewed the blue model, but you can also purchase it in black, orange, red, and white. Purchase the cooler for $250 and up through its official website. Note that the blender and USB charger are an accessory that come with an add-on price.

Nintey JOT Portable Battery Base for Google Home Mini

Having a Google Home Mini is simply awesome. It’s compact, unobtrusive, and really smart. And, when you add it to a group for multiple-room music, it’s even cooler. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take that speaker everywhere you go, without plugging and unplugging?

The JOT is a portable accessory for the Google Home Mini which has the privilege of bearing the “Made for Google” program badge. In other words, it’s not some generic knock-off device that doesn’t meet Google’s standards.

With an internal battery that provides up to eight hours of playback, this accessory is perfect for those of us with a fear of commitment. We only have so many smart speakers but we want them in all of our rooms. The JOT lets you take the speaker with you from one room to the next and without the hassle of cords.

The base comes apart near the top whereupon you slide your speaker into place. Snap the ring back on and you’re ready to power up. The base includes a microUSB port so you can plug your existing cord in.

Four LED lights indicate how much juice you’ve got left in the battery. Conveniently, there’s a cutout where you can toggle the mute button. A power button at the bottom lets you turn the whole thing off so you’re not wasting any charge. Otherwise the speaker will continue to listen for commands.

The JOT is available in two color options (Carbon, Silver) and runs just $39.95 at Ninety7’s website.

Anker intros the world’s smallest wall charger and a new Nebula Capsule projector

Anker today unveiled a series of new products including a very small wall charger.

After a whole year of development, the PowerPort Atom PD 1 makes its debut as the first product in the Atom series which will offer slim, lightweight PD wall chargers for MacBooks, phones and other PD devices.

Aptly named, the device is slightly bigger than a 5W stock smartphone charger, so you’ll be able to fit it almost anywhere. It features one single USB-C port that can deliver up to 27W of power through the Power Delivery standard.

Anker managed to make the Atom slimmer and more efficient than other competing products by using GaN (Gallium Nitride) components. It’s actually the first device of its kind to do so.

The PowerPort Atom PD 1 will go on sale towards the end of November for $29.99 on Amazon.

Next, Anker has also unveiled the Nebula Capsule II, a small entertainment device that brings new capabilities such as Android TV support and Google Assistant integration.

The gadget features a black cylindrical body and is only 5.9-inch tall, so it’s quite portable. It’s also able to project a 720p image at 200 ANSI lumens.

The new projector is powered by Android TV 9.0, so it brings support for a myriad of applications including YouTube, Hulu Plus and much more. And with Google Assistant on board, finding searching for media is a walk in the park with the Capsule II.

But wait there’s more, the Nebula also doubles a Bluetooth speaker that can offer up to 30 hours of playtime on a single charge.

The product will become available for early adopters on Kickstarter on October 26. Early Bird backers can order their device for $349.

Last, but not least, Anker announced the availability details of its Soundcore Model Zero+ speaker today. According to Anker, this is a product that has been envisioned by artists and sculpted by designers. Made from premium materials like brushed aluminum and woven fabric it’s quite stylish-looking, albeit a bit oddly shaped.

The portable speaker is the first from Soundcore to come with integrated Dolby Audio, so it can deliver a crisp and extremely detailed sound experience. It also has Google Assistant support and can offer 5 hours of battery life.

What’s more, the Model Zero+ also advantage of another first. It includes “Designed by Scan-Speak” drivers which are known for offering unmatched sound quality and music reproduction.

The speaker will go on sale in late November for $249.99.
